We are an extended footnote to the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery.
This emancipation did not take place all at once. Peak events pointed the direction, yet through a long period, the Israelites disputed the way with God and with Moses. They were "coming through" to accept God's way with them. Moses and God quarreled back with them. In all these disputations, disappointments, changes, and fresh starts they were accommodating themselves to God's way by letting go of their own. The result: the great emancipation.
