As was her habit the mother sat on the side of the bed as her son read a paragraph from the New Testament. It was rough going for a fourth grader, but with his mother's help, he was usually able to get through the text without stumbling too much. Mother had hoped that this habit would instill in her son a lifelong pattern of Bible reading.

Suddenly the boy stopped reading when he came to the words describing why Jesus had come into the world, "to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons." He repeated them aloud again.
