Walt was one of the lucky ones. He had access to an escape door when the flak over Nazi Germany tore through the Flying Fortress on which he served as co-pilot. When he parachuted into enemy territory he was immediately captured and put into a prison camp. The war had already devastated many of Germany's resources. Prison rations were meager to worthless. The daily cup of soup was flavored water. The loaf of bread was far more sawdust than flour. Starvation and subsequent death was widespread in the barracks.
