In the wake of the events of September 11, 2001, there have been a variety of reactions. Some people want to tighten immigration. Hate crimes against Arab Americans and others from south Asia have gone up. Fear has brought tension that has resulted in some destructive behaviors.
But not everyone has reacted that way. Some striking examples of faith crossing great divides have also arisen. In Toledo, Ohio, there is a huge mosque visible from the highway. In a hate crime after September 11, someone shot at the building. But a local Christian radio station organized a watch to support their neighbors. Christians, empowered by their faith, gathered outside the mosque, not to protest, but to provide protection to Muslims as they came for prayer. Although the chasm between cultures was increased in crisis by some, faith narrowed the gap for others.
