The vital connection between God's Spirit and life is established from the very beginning. In Genesis 1, the creative Spirit of God that moves over the waters transforms chaos into recognizable forms. The Hebrew word used in the Genesis passage is ru'ah. Ru'ah means spirit, wind, or breath. Ru'ah is not to be confused with some random gust of wind, even a mighty one; rather, it is the very breath of God, the essence of all life, that divine spark that makes us living creatures instead of clay statues. Ru'ah makes it possible for us to be.
