Velma Barfield was executed by lethal injection in the state of North Carolina in November, 1984, the first woman to be executed in the United States since 1962. She had poisoned her mother, fiance, and two others. After being condemned to death row, she had a change of heart, became a born-again Christian, and repented of her crimes. The state, however, decreed that she pay for her crimes, despite her repentance.
