Usually when you learn to play chess from a basic instruction booklet it will first teach you all the moves that the different pieces can make. After than an important piece of information which is often taught is the relative value of each piece. A pawn is worth one, the knight and bishop are worth three and a half, rooks are worth five, and the queen is worth the most, nine. It's important to know. If you wind up trading pieces, then you can calculate whether it was worth it.
Here in the Gospel passage the calculation of the cost was not figured well. For thirty pieces of silver, Judas betrays our Lord. In order to go unnoticed, Peter denies knowing our Lord. Many times we miscalculate as well. There may be times when we betray our Lord or deny him by forgetting about who we are and not acting like Christians. We might go along with the crowd rather than be honest. We might be rude and thoughtless because we are in a hurry and in that way miscalculate because we are called to be kind and loving. To represent our Lord the way we should we must calculate things the right way.
