Until the cross, the disciples...
Illustration
Until the cross, the disciples never really understood the Messiahship of Jesus. This was demonstrated when James and John came up to him and asked if they could be on his right and left hand when he ruled over his kingdom. Jesus told them that they showed their unfitness for such positions by asking such a question. And when the ten heard about the brothers' request, they were angry with them. The potential for a schism between the future leaders of the church was very real. I am sure Peter was the lead grumbler in the complaint against James and John.
