Two friends were strolling along. One commented that his friend appeared down in the mouth and inquired why. His companion said that he had had a terrible argument with his wife which resulted in her oath that she would not demean herself to speak a single word to him for a month. The first thought about that and about his friend's relationship with his wife and said to him, "I would think that would please you as much as you two argue with each other." His friend responded, "Yeah, but this is the end of the month."
Suffering is part of a life of faith. However, we should be clear what we are suffering for --the glory of God or our own vanity. We often suffer to prolong estranged relationships and engage in self pity. Christ suffered to bring about reconciliation.
