Tom, a publisher, needed a successor. He had been eyeing three top editors with different work habits and extraordinary patience. Time was getting shorter, as Tom's lung cancer was spreading. Tom spent more and more time in the conference room watching the staff work and interact. He had spent 43 years here and wanted his successor to be an able person. Tom begin to see patterns developing: excellent work habits, deadlines being met, kindness to line editors while correcting their work, and good rapport were the marks he was looking for. He was ready to announce his successor.
