Tom had been a preacher...
Illustration
Tom had been a preacher for over forty years when his retirement came. Week in and week out he had studied the texts, searched for illustrations, and prepared his sermons. Although his ministry had involved many things, preaching stood at the center of it for him. It was both the starting point and the point. Now he was to retire. Forty years of preparing sermons each week was drawing to a close with his final service this coming week. What would he do now that he was to retire? Already he knew the answer to at least part of it. It would be as an interim or as a supply preacher or in some other way, but many Sundays he would find himself someplace preaching. Preaching the kingdom of God was in his blood. It was not just something he did to earn a living. Preaching the kingdom of God was a part of who he was.
