Today the generation which finds itself in its mid-30s to 40s is called "The Sandwich Generation." These people must not only take care of their newborn children, but also their elderly parents who are becoming frail. They are "sandwiched" between generations.
Financial worries are not the "Sandwich Generation's" only concerns for their elderly parents. Our "Pepsi Generation" does not even acknowledge the fact that there are "old people" in our world. Only recently have movies like, "Cocoon", or television shows such as, "Golden Girls" started to mention the elderly and their plight; although even in these productions they are portrayed as spunky, smart-aleck types more like teenagers than senior citizens.
The book of Sirach enjoins us to care for our mothers and fathers. We are told that, "Whoever honors his father will be gladdened by his own children ..." What a blessing to share love early in family life so that we may share a loving family late in life -- even unto eternal life.
Love your parents in the name of the Lord!
