Today is the age of the human body. We are obsessed with the way the body looks. The ads in the media continually tell us the importance of having a flat stomach (the best beer bellies in America by Pabst Blue Ribbon), or the importance of a good figure (Diet Pepsi), or the importance of the right diet (Quaker's "Corn Bran" high fiber corn cereal), or the importance of exercise to keep us trim and fit (Scandinavian Health Spas). A recent talk show in Cincinnati asked the question: "What makes a man look sexy to a woman?" One answer to the question was: "A man carrying a gym bag because the gym bag tells me he cares about his body." The shape of our body is important for a good self-image and self-respect. The shape of our body also has an effect on the way others see us.
The Apostle Paul also talks about the body, our body. The Holy Spirit dwells in our body. Our body is the home for God's presence in the world. Paul raises the question: "If we are concerned about the physical shape of our bodies, should we not be more concerned for the shape of the 'temple' which houses the Holy Spirit?"
