The time is out of joint; O cursed spite, That I was ever born to set it right! Shakespeare in Hamlet
The placement of this incident from Jacob's life is itself most instructive. In the preceding verses he has set in motion plans to encounter his "long lost" brother, Esau, from whom he has been separated and estranged since the time he stole his brother's birthright and, aided by his mother, fled for his life. Esau dramatically announced at the time that he would seek revenge if ever he got the chance.
