Emphasis Preaching Journal
Throughout the night we have...
Illustration
Throughout the night we have come, keeping vigil,
watching, waiting in the in-between --
the Jewish Sabbath, between Friday and Sunday.
We have come, each taking a small taste
from the round, brown loaf that rests
beside the wine on the candlelit banquet table.
The bread is hollowed out now, by our sharing,
hallowed by our presence in its brokenness.
Round, hollow, empty, hallowed, just as was
your tomb, Lord, that Sunday long ago ...
and yet today, this day.
You emerge from the tomb;
you emerge from the loaf.
watching, waiting in the in-between --
the Jewish Sabbath, between Friday and Sunday.
We have come, each taking a small taste
from the round, brown loaf that rests
beside the wine on the candlelit banquet table.

you emerge from the loaf.
