These words are the opposite of what we generally hear, that is, we are generally told that we should be generous. But this is a valid proverb.
This is a true story. A man said to a fellow worker that he could buy items wholesale. The fellow worker asked him to buy an item wholesale. Rather than admitting then that he had no way to obtain items wholesale, this worker bought items from watches to televisions and sold them below his cost. Rather than admit he had lied, as you might guess, this man went through all his savings and finally had to take bankruptcy. How much better if he had heeded verse 5 in the Today's English Version, "Get out of the trap like a bird or deer escaping from a hunter."
