There was a time when life had seemed simple. The world operated under a given set of rules, and he knew what they were: things, people, circumstances were either good or bad, acceptable or unacceptable. Which meant, of course, they either measured up to his standards and matched his view of reality, or they didn't. But that was before his life had been complicated with compassion. Things were different now. He had changed and saw the world through changed eyes. He had grown much more tolerant, much more empathetic, much more forgiving. But it wasn't an easy lesson.
