There is a rather old story about the preacher who spent hours in preparation for her sermons. When she told her friends about it, they teased her about not trusting the Holy Spirit. She realized that she did work awfully hard, reading the lessons, praying, reading, writing, studying what others had to say, and listening. Yet, she still sweated over every word. She asked her friends about trusting the Spirit, and learned she had to just get up on Sunday, read the lesson, say a prayer and the Spirit would speak to her.
That week, she didn't even look at the lesson. Sunday morning, she stood up, read the Gospel lesson, and bowed her head in prayer. "Holy Spirit, speak to me that I may share God's word." She waited, and their came a slight breeze and she heard the whispering of the Holy Spirit. "I speak to you every week, but today I have nothing to say, for you did not do your homework."
