There is an old proverb that reads, "When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt." Throughout the Old Testament the prophets spoke forth the wisdom of God. In books like The Wisdom of Sirach, the wisdom of God was collected and written down. But as the opening verse of today's reading observes, "Wisdom is her own recommendation."
Now, in the coming of the Christ Child, wisdom's verbal display would be silenced for a while. Now it would quietly tent among Israel in the life and work of Jesus Christ. Yes indeed, "how silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given." The wondrous work of God's wisdom would now speak for itself in the blessed ministry of the Son of God.
