There is an old legend...

There is an old legend told about Saint Martin of Tours. One day the holy man was sitting in his prison cell praying. There was a knock at the door and an august presence entered his cell. There was something very imposing about this mysterious figure who had come to visit him. Saint Martin stood and bowed deeply then asked his distinguished visitor who he was.
In a voice with great authority the visitor answered, "I am your savior come to release you." The saint was uncertain what to think and how to determine if the visitor was telling the truth.
"Would you be so good to show me the signs of your suffering?" he asked very humbly. Whereupon, so the story goes, the devil vanished!
Only a true savior suffers with and for those being saved.
