There is no pain quite like that of a stiff-neck. There is no flexibility to move your head from side to side, or in any other direction. The expression stiff-necked, as used in reference to Israel in verse 9, is a way of describing someone as being stubborn and arrogant. Isn't it amazing that Israel had Moses, the new tablets of rules to live by, and most of all they had Jehovah? However, despite all that they had going for them, they still wanted to go their own way, doing their own thing. What causes a spiritual stiff-neck can be contagious.
