There has never been an aristocracy in the United States. On the other hand, great men of wealth have exercised the influence of kings in North America. The uncrowned royalty of our land has been the likes of Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Gould, Mellon, Hunt, Pickens, and their stripe. Those who have languished in poverty while the super rich luxuriated in their Newport, Rhode Island "summer cottages" (and of which rivaled, in its day, the best of Europe's mansions) must have wondered, "Where, O Lord, is justice?"
News this past summer of the discovery of the watery grave of the Titanic brought to mind one of those rare moments when the "kings, of the earth" (American style) were brought low. Some of the great money barons of America went to their deaths on the Titanic. None of their wealth nor power could avail for them in that grim hour.
Daniel reminds us that, even though kings arise in the earth, the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom. It may take a while for it to come about, but God has promised it.
