There is both promise and threat in the news that God will come quickly to interrupt our earthly experience. Some are not moved by either. George Harris, the president of Amherst College between 1899-1912, discovered what some preachers soon learn: Guidance intended to be helpful is sometimes wasted, even when ignoring it imperils the careless hearer.
Harris, a member of the clergy, addressed Amherst students during a worship service at the beginning of a new academic year. He broke off after the first few sentences of his prepared homily. "I intended to give you some advice," he said, "but now I remember how much is left over from last year unused."
