There are many navigation dams on the Mississippi which the Army Corps of Engineers has built in an attempt to control the mighty river. On the east side of such structures, the water is extremely turbulent, boiling and churning with unbelievable force. Some of the best fishing is to be found along the slippery rocks which line the banks. Although a danger exists, a fisherman is relatively safe when one is able to secure a solid place to stand. The solid ground offers a safe footing from the vortex of water that would quickly carry one into the dark abyss of a watery grave. Life also provides us with places or options that are latent with fulfillment or danger. Personal relationships, our sexuality, our vocations, our possessions, and our search for purpose and a meaningful life all provide an opportunity for fulfillment or for personal chaos. Peter's confession also sets us upon a rock that does not move. The forgiveness and love which come to us in word and sacrament equip and empower us for life. No effort is needed to muscle our way to the waters of life; only a confession of faith: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God." -- Reisen
