There are at least two ways one becomes "a new creation" in Christ, "by perspiration" and "by inspiration." The former results from a rational decision of the mind. The later comes with an evoked response of the heart. The two are not mutually exclusive. Where one initiates the other follows, supports or sustains.
In Zambia a missionary couple have been working in the field of theological education. It was a basic effort founded in the practical belief that without the committed hard work necessary for basic education nothing would change. After years of work one of the missionaries overheard two church pastors with whom he had been working. One rather proudly said, "we will be receiving between 175 and 245 new members by baptism this week." The other somewhat quietly said, "we baptized 243 peopIe last Sunday."
The "perspiration" had been translated into "inspiration." Large numbers of people are becoming "new creatures in Christ."
