Terry was offered a new job in California. Accepting the job would mean moving over
2,000 miles away from her family. She loved the change in her life, but there were times
when she missed her family. She realized that with her new job she would not be able to
go home for Thanksgiving. It would be the first time she would not be with her parents
and sisters and their families on Thanksgiving.
She realized that she would have nothing to do on Thanksgiving Day. Her coworkers would be with their families; the mall and everything else would be closed. Then she read about a church that provided Thanksgiving meals to people struggling with financial issues or in need. Terry contacted the church, volunteering to help serve the meal.
Terry looked forward to helping on Thanksgiving Day. While she missed her family back home, at least she would not spend her first Thanksgiving away from home alone. Terry not only served meals but began talking to the people she was serving. At times she sat down to talk with children, as well as their parents. Their stories of struggle touched her; she realized how fortunate she was.
When Terry finished, she went to her apartment and called her parents. The next week the pastor called her to thank her for her help. He said that several people stopped to tell him how much they appreciated having someone to talk with. They said that usually no one bothers with them and they appreciated talking with someone who cared.
This Thanksgiving, may we remember those people who have nowhere to go as well as those struggling with personal issues.
