A teenager came home from school announcing that she wished to travel with her class across country for the spring trip. Her parents, remembering all the struggles, the mistakes, and doubts, and the insecurities of the last sixteen years wondered about this "exciting" plan.
The young woman began "When I was little I couldn't walk and you held my hands until my legs were strong and my coordination developed. When I was small you taught me about danger and I learned the word 'no.' As I attended grade school you were there when I needed help: you talked to my teachers; you read me stories; you held me when I cried. In the last months you've taught me to drive the car, allowed me to shop and prepare meals for the family. You have been there to teach me. I come now in thanksgiving and as a witness for all you have given me. I am ready to live as you have given me strength to do. I will act as you have taught me."
