Consider that in France last year, more than 70 percent of companies who laid off workers sent the layoff notice by e-mail. The practice was so widespread that French prime minister Lionel Jospin branded it as "inhuman," and in June 2001, the French parliament passed a law making layoff-by-e-mail more difficult.
