Tanya Luhrmann, associate professor of anthropology at the University of California - San Diego, and author of Persuasions of the Witch's Craft, wrote in US News, April 7, 1997, that magic, God, and a belief that one belongs on a different planet fit into the same category of knowledge which cannot be proved or disproved. All claim to benefit the participants. But even if some believe their religion to be true enough to sacrifice their lives for it (as the followers of Heaven's Gate did in taking poison, hoping to join a spacecraft in another life), Jesus shows clearly that one can gain the kingdom of Heaven only through faith in him.
We thank God the Father that he loved the world so much that he provided a way to Heaven through the gift of his Son Jesus Christ. While others may hope that their faith will be true, we have the assurance of eternal life if we believe in him.
