Syndicated radio host Dennis Prager wrote an article about how people who do not believe in the Bible make ethical choices. Interviewing a 26-year-old Swedish student who told him that she did not believe in God or any religion, he asked how she knew what was right or wrong. "My heart tells me," she responded.
And so it is. People decide in favor of same-sex marriage because they see two people who care about each other and conclude that they should be able to be happy together. Or they are moved by seeing an animal used for medical research and decide against such experiments, not thinking of the people who will suffer because of the lack of that research. They see an attractive young woman who wants an abortion and are moved to agree that she should be able to move on with her life. They do not see the unborn fetus that will suffer because of that decision. For 25 years, Prager has asked high school seniors across the country if they would save their dog or a stranger first if both were drowning. The majority said that they would save their dog first because they love it and do not know the stranger. Without the Bible, no one can make proper moral choices.
Jesus gives us a code of ethics that will cause us to stand out from the crowd. This moral code is based on eternal truths that are applicable even in our day of secularism and cynicism. A follower of Jesus Christ is to live this kind of life in spite of criticism and persecution from the world.
