The super discount store chains could hardly wait to move into Carl's county where he
runs "Carl's Hardware Store." Numerous stories about these super discount stores putting
small stores out of business made it look like Carl was the David who was up against a
global "Goliath!" Carl decided that he would diversify. He became a dealer for a satellite
dish company, as well as a cellular phone company. Carl continued to have the expertise
to tell people which ant traps work best in the area. He fixed broken windows and screens
from people's homes. He also placed special orders for fireplace equipment.
As the super discounts stores moved in, they got some business. They had a turnover in employees, but the local town residents can call Carl up at night when their plumbing fixture is broken and he will open up the hardware store and get them a part late at night or on the weekends. This is an example of a modern David and Goliath battle today.
