In speaking to Cornelius and his family, Peter recounts Jesus' story and the events that started his ministry. Peter didn't know Jesus at the time he was baptized by John, but hearing about it must have made a deep impression on him. He recognized the event as the great "send-off" to Jesus' ministry.
We sense the importance of "sendoffs" in life. The baptism of a baby is a joyous event for families and churches. Birthday parties show our love for children as we send them into another year of life. And, there are confirmation, graduations (which we formerly called "commencements"), wedding celebrations, ordinations -- all constituting a "send-off" to a new dimension of life. And, in each, we wish for the person or persons, an effective, happy, and purposeful life, filled with blessing. How often do we express this with true benediction: "God be with you!"?
