Sometimes when we read short portions of the scripture each week, we develop a skewed perspective of Jesus' life and ministry. In fact, sometimes we begin to develop an understanding of Jesus that I would call the "brass pole" syndrome. By this I mean, we begin to think that Jesus was some superhuman miracle worker, a God who slid down a brass pole. One day he walked around the earth doing wonders, performing healings and exorcisms, exercising authority over nature, reading people's minds and then, woosh, back up the brass pole to heaven.
