Sometimes we see a famous saying over the doors of libraries and various college and
university buildings, the words: You will know the truth, and the truth will make you
free. Of course, there's a lot of truth to that saying.
But in our John passage for today (from which the saying is taken) Jesus says more than that -- he says much more.
Jesus says, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
How do you and I actually get to know what the truth is? We can learn some truths from the libraries, colleges, and universities that like to display these words. But to know the most important truths -- to know the truth -- Jesus says that we need to continue in his word.
You and I need to read his word, and live in his word. Then we will truly be his disciples, and we will know the truth, and the truth will make us free indeed.
