Sometimes our life looks like...
Illustration
Sometimes our life looks like a chalkboard covered with all kinds of clashing marks. There are misspellings, wrong answers to questions, a hodgepodge of words that seem to mean nothing. This is the sorry state of a sinner's life.
Such writing on the blackboard may indeed represent our present condition and how we feel about ourselves. But our biblical faith does not let us stay with just this picture. Now in our imagination we need to see someone standing at the chalkboard with an eraser wiping away the misspellings, the wrong answers, the meaninglessness of all those jumbled words. We are ready once again to write, to start a new chapter in our lives, confident that the mistakes of the past will not impede us.
The cleansed chalkboard is a visual image of what John writes about in his first letter: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
