Someone once asked a great man who had risen out of humble beginnings, "What did
your father teach you that was most important?" The man thought for a moment, then
replied, "He taught me that whatever he happened to be doing at the time, that was the
most important." What Jesus is trying to teach Martha is a similar quality of
attentiveness, of living fully in the present. Her sister, Mary, is gifted at living in the
present; yet Martha, perpetually "distracted by many things," is not so adept.
