Small or insignificant towns sometimes produce legendary figures. Take the city of
Aberdeen, Maryland, for example. It probably means nothing to most people. But to
baseball fans, it is the home of Cal Ripken Jr. Aberdeen is where he grew up, attended
high school, learned to play ball. Today, Aberdeen houses the Ripken Museum, and a
baseball stadium called, Ripken Stadium.
Or how about Brantford, Ontario; nothing of significance to most people. But this small city has two claims to fame. It was here that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The first long distance phone call was placed by Bell from downtown Brantford to Paris, Ontario. Brantford is called the Telephone City. But to hockey fans, Brantford is best known as the home of Wayne Gretzky. It is where he first learned to skate and play hockey. Today, there is a Wayne Gretzky Parkway and the Gretzky Sports Complex.
Bethlehem was also a small, insignificant place, until One was born there who would become king of the Jews.
