In the sixteenth century, a minister was accused of heresy and brought before the court in a small English village. "Have you prepared a statement for your defense?" he was asked. "No," answered the minister, "God will provide the words I shall need." "Then what defense does God give on your behalf?" asked the court representative, with some amusement. "He speaks these words," replied the minister. "Judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter" (Isaiah 59:14).
