Shelby Foote, in his narration...

Shelby Foote, in his narration of The Civil War series of videos, talks of the state of the Negro slaves in the South. It was usual, he says, for a slave to belong to two or three different masters in a lifetime. Often without warning, a slave could be either sold directly, or sent to the slave auctions. Children were usually kept with their mothers until they were weaned at about age three, but after that time they or their mothers could be sold separately.
