Several years ago, the Petoskey, Michigan, News-Review had two local news items on the same page. One concerned a local attorney who was convicted of "under-reporting" his income on his Michigan tax return by more than $100,000 over several years. As punishment, he had to pay back taxes with interest.
On the same page was an account of a local native American who was widely known to have an uncontrolled drinking problem. He had been convicted of stealing a bottle of cheap wine from a convenience store. He was sentenced to spend six months in the county jail.
Unlike modern society, Ben Sirach assures us that God's justice is truly impartial. God not only gives fair treatment to the poor, God gives no special treatment to the rich.
