Several years ago a news commentator related the story about a major fire on the third floor of an apartment building. The firemen quickly arrived and extended a ladder to the window where a woman with a baby in her arms was screaming for help. Immediately a safety net was stretched beneath the window and she was told to let the little child drop into the net. The child fell unharmed. "Come down the ladder," the firemen cried to her; but she returned to the room and began struggling to pull a bulky mattress through the window.
