Several animals, such as crabs...
Illustration
Several animals, such as crabs, oysters, lizards, earthworms, and starfish are able to regrow amputated body parts or to regenerate in various ways. In times past, the starfish were dredged from the sea and mutilated. They were considered predatory pests in the oyster and mussel beds. Their bodies were torn apart limb by limb and, assumed dead, they were interred in a watery grave. Rather than dying, the starfish merely grew new arms and from the remaining body parts, new animals were formed.
