"See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me," writes Malachi. This
passage brings three popular songs to mind. Back in the '60s there was a top-ten hit titled,
"Expressway to Your Heart." It started with car horns honking. The Soul Survivors sang
it. God's goal is to build an "expressway to our hearts." Everything in the Bible, 1,000
pages in all, thousands of years of sacred history, is about God preparing a path, "the way
of the Lord," to come to us. For millennia, God had been knocking down mountains and
lifting up valleys, moving heaven and earth to prepare for Jesus. It reminds us of the
words from Diana Ross' song, "Ain't no mountain high enough -- no valley low enough --
no river wide enough to keep me from you." The way of the Lord is good. It's the way to
fullness of life. This Advent will we respond to God's gracious coming in Jesus Christ by
singing -- and trying to "prepare ye the way of the Lord"?
