Scott Peck, in his book People of the Lie, describes an exorcism at which he was present. He writes that the exorcism team would speak either to the person, or to the demon possessing the person, but not to both. Part of the demonic nature is that it seeks to confuse and distort. The critical moment, Peck writes, is the expulsion, in which the prayers to God or Christ are most important. God is the exorcist, working through the team of exorcists. It is the gentleness and willingness of the team to suffer which determines the outcome of the exorcism process.
