On Saturday, March 13, 1993, a blizzard hit the eastern portion of the United States, dumping up to three feet of snow in many areas, with winds gusting up to 70 miles an hour. On Sunday, March 14, 1993, a Pittsburgh radio station announced that they had received over 1,500 cancellations, and due to the size of the list it was impossible to read over the air all the cancellations. Ten people showed up for worship that morning. And why did they come to church on such a day? As one man replied, "Because it is the sabbath." God created the sabbath. God knew that people were not made to work eight, 10, 12 hours a day, seven days a week. People need a day of rest, thus, God created the sabbath. And yet, many people work even on their day off. As one woman said to me, "I do more work on my day off, doing all the things that I cannot do when I am at work -- cleaning the house, doing the wash, and running errands." I enjoy visiting restored communities, seeing how people lived a hundred years ago. Today, we have so many time-saving machines to make our life easier. And yet, we are, as a society, exhausted. Why? From the pace of life. We need a day of rest. God also knew that people have spiritual needs, thus, the sabbath was created as a time for worship, prayer, Christian fellowship and the studying of God's word. The sabbath was created by God -- a day of rest; a day of worship; a time to be restored physically and spiritually. -- Frank
