Respect for "the white-haired ones" is nearly universal amongst Native American peoples. It is considered that wisdom comes from time and experience, and the counsel of the elders is sought after, especially in times of trouble. Since they have seen so much in their lives, they can contribute a sense of history to any discussion, share their observations on life, and offer advice. The Winnebago people take this belief even further. The grandfather and grandmother are the ones to rear the current generation of children!
