Recently the youth group at our church performed a realistic drama for Good Friday. It was a modern-day representation of the trial of Jesus Christ. The pastor played the part of the prosecutor. Every witness called forward was first sworn in. They were asked to place their left hand on the Bible, raise their right hand, and "promise to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help them God." Right after this they lied. They incriminated our modern-day actor Jesus when he had done nothing. Based on the lies of the witnesses, the Lord was found guilty again.
A false witness need not deliberately lie. He might simply fail to tell all the truth. The Holy Spirit will guide us in all truth and, as we repeat this truth, it will glorify Jesus Christ. Lies are meant to glorify the liar, although they do not. Truth glorifies God because he is the Father of truth. How is your own speech doing?
