The recent challenges to the American automotive industry by the Japanese have as much to do with letting go of the past as it has with adopting new management strategies for the future. A GM executive stated that "the problem with past successes is that the past reinforces the future." But the old adage, "What worked in the past will work in the future," is not always true. The problem is anticipating the future by developing the adaptive mechanisms which allow for the inclusion of constructive change where necessary.
