In a recent baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees the Yankees trailed by two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game appeared over when the last batter flied out to left field. But, that was not the case. A fan had run onto the field just before the play and one of the umpires had signaled time. The time called by the umpire nullified the play. The batter had been given a reprieve from the game-ending out. The batter batted again and this time got on base. The following batters also got on and the Yankees won a game they thought they had lost. Mercy had been extended to the Yankees and they took full advantage of that mercy. (The attitude of the Red Sox will be left for another time.) -- Watson
