A recent article in the New Yorker magazine chronicles the semester of a remedial English class at one of the city's colleges. Increasingly, students are not prepared for college level course work requiring reading, comprehension, critical analysis, and reflective writing skills. As the article suggests, this is a problem for many schools across the nation, not only in New York City. The instructor, a veteran teacher of 30 years, goes beyond his duty to help the students. He offers outside help, encourages their attempts, and adjusts the curriculum to improve their mastery.
